Due to its location close to the White House, this Maryland university offers many research partnerships with the U.S. government and is often supported by agencies such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Homeland Security.
Over 39,000 students enroll every year, making College Park, Maryland a hub for higher education and collegiate sports. As a member of the Big Ten Conference, student athletes compete in basketball at Xfinity Center, football at Maryland Stadium, lacrosse and field hockey. The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center home of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance hosts events such as plays and concerts throughout the year.
Not to be missed is a visit to see the Testudo statue in front of McKeldin Library. This bronze statue of the university’s terrapin mascot is rubbed by many of the students hoping to earn good grades during finals week. Guests are also invited to rub the turtle’s nose for a little extra luck, proving that such traditions are not only reserved for students attending college in Maryland, but also for visitors.
